Video surveillance stopped theft at construction site

VideoGuard by AddSecure’s video surveillance solution helps Selmer Byg protect their construction sites, work environment and delivery quality.

Due to recurring thefts and vandalism, Danish construction company Selmer Byg A/S ordered three video surveillance towers for one of its residential buildings. Just a few days after the installation was completed, four burglars were caught red-handed. The company has since signed an agreement with VideoGuard by AddSecure, which now monitors all of the company’s projects across the country.

Per Kirk Boysen, Project Manager at Selmer Byg, says:

“Theft on construction sites is a challenge on multiple levels. Not only does theft increase our costs and workload, it also causes delays. At the end of the day, we need to ensure our ability to deliver projects on time.”

Background

Selmer Byg is part of Selmer Gruppen A/S, which has over 20 years of experience in the purchase, renovation, construction and sale of residential rental properties. Similar to other construction sites around the world, the company’s projects have often been subject to theft and vandalism, affecting productivity, profits and potentially the company’s good name. This led them to VideoGuard from AddSecure.

Video surveillance the solution to the problem

After a series of break-ins at a large housing development in Hedensted, Per Kirk Boysen contacted Michael Jørgensen from VideoGuard to install three video surveillance towers on the property. The video towers were installed the next day.

Per Kirk Boysen says:

“Michael from VideoGuard promised to put an end to the break-ins and it worked. The installation was quick and the system worked perfectly. Just a few days later, four thieves were caught red-handed after cutting the power, smashing windows and stealing valuable goods from the premises.”

Video surveillance around the clock

The intelligent video surveillance offers long-range monitoring around the clock. In the event of an illegal intrusion, the control center will switch to a live image of the construction site, address the intruder if deemed necessary, and do everything possible to protect the area.

Michael Jørgensen, Sales Manager at VideoGuard by AddSecure, says:

“Thanks to our high-quality cameras and intelligent video analytics, there are no blind spots. In Hedensted, the system easily detected the intruders and took detailed close-ups of their facial features and license plates.”

Selmer Byg’s protection package includes a Danish alarm center, a local security company and – as perpetrators often cut power to the area – a dual battery pack, as well as Live View for app and laptop.

Michael Jørgensen adds:

“Usually when our control center addresses intruders via our on-site speaker system, they quickly flee, so it’s quite unusual to catch them in action as we have done this time. While the local police were alerted, the security guards were only four minutes away and quickly identified the burglars’ car and trailer, including $250,000 worth of tools.”

The future of VideoGuard by AddSecure
After the successful outcome in Hedensted, Selmer Byg decided to upgrade their agreement with VideoGuard by AddSecure to include all their construction sites across Denmark.

Per Kirk Boysen concludes:

“We build up to 600 houses every year, so it makes sense to have a regular monitoring partner. Theft and vandalism is a recurring problem in the industry, including loss of cables, tools, fuel, machinery and – at later stages of a project – even white goods like refrigerators. We are happy with this solution, which helps us protect our construction sites, work environment and delivery quality.”
