Sanssouci Park: Video Guard oversees the restoration of the Roman Baths
Sanssouci Park in Potsdam: a popular tourist destination and architectural contemporary witness. The preservation of the facility in terms of monument protection is an important task in order to make the cultural asset accessible to future generations. The Roman baths in the park are currently being extensively renovated. The work includes the restoration of the building shells and interiors as well as the associated gardens. To prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access and thus prevent theft and damage through vandalism, a Video Guard camera tower guards the area.
With Charlottenhof Palace, a large terraced area and a fountain in the center, the 300-hectare Sanssouci Park in Potsdam impresses many visitors from all over the world every year. The Roman Baths, which King Frederick William IV had built from 1829, are among the architectural highlights of the site. They reflect the client’s “longing for Italy” and today contribute to the diversity and attractiveness of the park as a tourist destination. However, time has left its mark on the fabric of the building, so extensive renovation work is currently being carried out on the Roman Baths and the associated gardens. The façades, roofs, retaining walls and the fountain and garden architecture in particular show signs of damage. In order for visitors to the park to be able to enjoy the Roman baths again in the future, basic repairs are necessary. This restoration is scheduled for completion in 2026. To ensure that the work runs smoothly and to protect against theft and vandalism, the site is guarded by state-of-the-art camera technology. Video Guard is used here.
Remote area attracts thieves
Spacious and remote areas in particular can attract uninvited guests. Theft and vandalism are a fundamental problem on construction sites and often lead to high economic losses. The special ambience of the Roman baths is also attractive in itself. However, unauthorized persons also put themselves in danger when they enter construction sites. In addition, even minor interventions in the historic building fabric and graffiti can cause considerable damage.
Preventing theft and vandalism
Security measures have been taken to ensure that the ongoing renovation work is not jeopardized: A Video Guard camera tower – connected to the 24/7 staffed alarm center – monitors the area day and night. This effective system prevents unauthorized access and thus the theft of valuable building materials and machinery as well as vandalism. Three high-resolution ultra-lowlight cameras continuously monitor the area. The software reliably detects intruders and immediately reports them to the security control center. First, they are asked to leave the railing via the loudspeakers integrated into the tower. If they do not comply with this request, the police will be called in. Thomas Müller, project manager for safety technology, is also convinced: “This camera technology makes it possible to take action at an early stage and avert damage before it even occurs. Preventive action ensures efficient protection and helps to ensure that work can be carried out as planned.”
